This unique Community Interest Company is the brainchild of Steven Heard a local skilled carpenter and welder/metalworker from Minehead in Somerset.
Our ambition is to create a workshop where he can make more Metalheads, engage local volunteers to support and also train others, particularly those with mental health challenges and learning difficulties. We truly believe that learning the new skills required to make a Metalhead not only helps with personal development but also supports mental wellbeing and builds confidence.
With the local community at its heart in August 2022, The Original Metalheads Company was set up to turn what was a simple hobby into a professional, transparent and open organisation whose vision is that excess earnings will be shared back into Minehead and district good causes.
Steven is profoundly deaf, diabetic and unable to work as a professional carpenter due to Meniere’s disease which causes vertigo and loss of balance.
The idea started back in the pandemic in 2020. During lockdown, Steven wanted to find a way to help not only his own mental health, but also to find a way of cheering the local people up during those difficult and dark days. The Metalheads were born! Using scrap metal, old spray paints and even clothing Steven creates and maintains these quirky little characters that can be seen outside so many shops and businesses in and around Minehead.
Materials come to his small workshop from local garages, blacksmiths and visits to scrap yards which means all sculptures come with a set of green credentials. These characters have become so famous that a Metalheads ‘Trail’ has been created for old and young alike to follow in and around Minehead and are spreading far and wide!
